Kapitänleutnant Carl Siegfried Ritter von Georg (born 1886 - died 1957).

Commander of German U-boat SM U-57, which sank the Aylevarroo on 8 October 1917.

Kaptlt Georg later received the 'Orden Pour le Mérite' ('Order for Merit' - the 'Blue Max') as commander of U-boat SM U-101.

It was the greatest German war decoration for honour and was given to officers for great military performance and valour. Only 27 U-boat commanders received this award.

The Blue Max
Pour le Mérite

The 'Orden Pour le Mérite' was created by Friedrich the Great of Prussia in 1740. He was a great admirer of the French and their customs, hence the French name for the medal.

A higher order was the 'Orden Pour le Mérite mit Eichenlaub', the 'Order for Merit with Oakleaf'.

SM U-57 sank the Aylevarroo during World War I and Kaptlt Georg needed to protect his vessel. After sinking the Aylevarroo, Kaptlt Georg recorded in his submarine's war diary...

The Steamer cannot have seen the U-boat and its position in front of Queenstown should remain hidden for the moment. I am not going to search for possible survivors to ascertain the name of the Steamer. The loss of the Steamer will therefore, if it is noticed at this place at all, will be ascribed to mines.

Kaptlt Georg's tactics worked well, it has taken over eighty years to find what happened to the Aylevarroo.
